The hidden Remote controller feature to Raspberry PI’s Rasbmc

Wouldn’t it be a dream to control your Raspbmc media center by using the TV remote? What if we showed you how!?

Tell me, TELL ME! what do i need?

Actually there’s really little to tell. Raspbmc has included a basic implementation of CEC in their newer versions (RC4 and up) which means you can now control your Raspberry Pi Media Center by using your TV remote.
The RC3 version also had this function, but was failing on some of the commands like play, pause, next, previous and so on (the Arrows and OK button seemed to be working fine).
What you need is an CEC-enabled TV or amplifier that is connected to the Raspberry PI through HDMI cable. This means that you no longer need to enable XBMC Web server function to control your Rasberry PI. If youo wish to be able to control it using a smart phone as well, you need to download the official XBMC controller App made by XBMC self from either Google Play/Market or Apple Store regarding on which device you have.

This CEC feature is only implemented in the raspbmc version of XBMC and will not work on the regular XBMC version for normal computers. (Well not yet at least).

Unfortunately we here at Nordic Vikings was only able to test this on Samsung Televisions as this is the only brand we own, but as this is a universal connection, we assume it’s the same for all.

If you use a Samsung TV, you will notice that the raspberry PI gets connected to the TV through Anynet+ which is Samsungs CEC edition.
Other Brands names are:

  • Anynet+ (Samsung)
  • Aquos Link (Sharp)
  • BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony)
  • HDMI-CEC (Hitachi)
  • E-link (AOC)
  • Kuro Link (Pioneer)
  • CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba)
  • SimpLink (LG)
  • VIERA Link (Panasonic)
  • EasyLink (Philips)
  • RuncoLink (Runco International)
  • NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi)

So, What is CEC?

CEC is short for “Consumer Electronics Control” and is a feature that allows you to control CEC compatible devices using the attached device’s remote control. This is done by sending the remote signal through the HDMI cable and into the CEC device.

Don’t have an HDMI cable? or it’s very VERY old? you can get on really cheap here.

Raspberry PI, what a treat!

When we first heard of this little credit card size computer our jaws dropped and we were ready to throw our money into the hands of anyone selling it, of cause we were too late so the first batch slipped by us and we got stuck in the queue that formed as the developers ran into delivery difficulties and CE marking problems but finally it has arrived and what a treat it is

Raspberry PI, Ordered!

We just got a mail from Farnell UK letting us know we could now order Raspberry PI, and so we did!

Farnell UK states in the mail that this is pre-order and that it looks to be a July/August shipping depending on where in the order queue we are, so for now we’ll just have to sit back and wait.

Raspberry PI hits production

We have been following the development of the credit card size computer called Raspberry PI with great interest and were very happy to hear that the first order is being shipped to customers in the UK as we speak(… or type for that matter).

The little computer was delayed by lack of CE marking but this has been taken care of, and the Raspberry PI foundation now reports that mass production has  started, when the rest of us will see any of them is still uncertain but it can’t be too long.

We’re planning on doing a write up about the little sensation and what we intend to use it for but this will have to wait until we get it!
