Ingress, the game

We have been testing the new alternate reality game (ARG) Ingress, and it is really addictive

The game is still under development and is in beta testing at the moment so we are unsure about how much we are allowed to say about it but the game in itself is really nice, and makes you think twice if you see anyone next to a monument with a Android phone. You get sort of a matrix feeling when you run around town hacking portals and linking them with others… We recently hosted a event on Google + where anyone in the Stavanger region in the resistance faction of Ingress could join and meet up for a attack on the enlightenment factions portals in the Stavanger area, so it is a great way to meet new people with a common interest…

The hidden Remote controller feature to Raspberry PI’s Rasbmc

Wouldn’t it be a dream to control your Raspbmc media center by using the TV remote? What if we showed you how!?

Tell me, TELL ME! what do i need?

Actually there’s really little to tell. Raspbmc has included a basic implementation of CEC in their newer versions (RC4 and up) which means you can now control your Raspberry Pi Media Center by using your TV remote.
The RC3 version also had this function, but was failing on some of the commands like play, pause, next, previous and so on (the Arrows and OK button seemed to be working fine).
What you need is an CEC-enabled TV or amplifier that is connected to the Raspberry PI through HDMI cable. This means that you no longer need to enable XBMC Web server function to control your Rasberry PI. If youo wish to be able to control it using a smart phone as well, you need to download the official XBMC controller App made by XBMC self from either Google Play/Market or Apple Store regarding on which device you have.

This CEC feature is only implemented in the raspbmc version of XBMC and will not work on the regular XBMC version for normal computers. (Well not yet at least).

Unfortunately we here at Nordic Vikings was only able to test this on Samsung Televisions as this is the only brand we own, but as this is a universal connection, we assume it’s the same for all.

If you use a Samsung TV, you will notice that the raspberry PI gets connected to the TV through Anynet+ which is Samsungs CEC edition.
Other Brands names are:

  • Anynet+ (Samsung)
  • Aquos Link (Sharp)
  • BRAVIA Link and BRAVIA Sync (Sony)
  • HDMI-CEC (Hitachi)
  • E-link (AOC)
  • Kuro Link (Pioneer)
  • CE-Link and Regza Link (Toshiba)
  • SimpLink (LG)
  • VIERA Link (Panasonic)
  • EasyLink (Philips)
  • RuncoLink (Runco International)
  • NetCommand for HDMI (Mitsubishi)

So, What is CEC?

CEC is short for “Consumer Electronics Control” and is a feature that allows you to control CEC compatible devices using the attached device’s remote control. This is done by sending the remote signal through the HDMI cable and into the CEC device.

Don’t have an HDMI cable? or it’s very VERY old? you can get on really cheap here.

Need compatible SD card to your Raspberry PI? We recommend these..

For other USB gadgets to your Raspberry PI, you should have a look at these

How to solve slow Facebook app after upgrading (Android)

Have you upgraded to the new facebook application, but regret doing it because it runs really really slow? This is due to lack of phone resources, and the solution is easy.

Lets downgrade..

This solution will put the facebook app back to it’s previous state. Just follow these simple steps and you back to the way it was before you upgraded.

  1. Uninstall the current facebook application that you have installed on your smart phone.
  2. Start your QR code scanner
  3. Scan the code  below, and install the application.

A tip should your phone reject the installation is to go into the phones application settings and turn on “Allow Unknown sources”. This allows you to install applications outside of the Android Market/Play Store.

Symantec found malicious applications in Android Market

After scanning the Android Market, Symantec found multiple publisher ID’s that had been publishing applications with a malicious code in it. The crafted code is a modification of the  code “Android.Tonclank” which is defined as a trojan horse that steals information stored on the device. It may also open back-doors used by others to be able to execute commands through your phone.
